The Department of Education recently issued a memo that there will be no more homework for school kids on weekends. Hearing this, I’m thrilled with the idea. Growing up, I took studying too seriously. I would rather study during the weekends instead of going out to play. Looking back, I think I could have spent less time studying and more time going out and making friends. Although I want my son to excel in school, I don’t want him cooped up inside the house like I was – doing projects and assignments. I want him going out to play and making friends in the neighborhood. He is only spending three hours a day at school at age five but by next year, the number of hours he will spend at school will almost triple. It would be too much to ask for a six year old to study 8 hours a day for five days and still be doing assignments over the weekend. I’m glad DepEd agrees with me on this one.
